UPDATED: Barenaked Ladies Show at Seaworld Cancelled

UPDATE:

Barenaked Ladies have responded to their fans about the cancellation of their scheduled show at Seaworld in a statement on their official website:

"Hey everybody. We've talked things over, and decided not to play at Seaworld at this time. We watch movies too, ya know! Have you seen Star Trek IV? It's quite good. Kidding... We sometimes do that.

This is a complicated issue, and we don't claim to understand all of it, but we don't feel comfortable proceeding with the gig at this time. The Seaworld folks have been gracious , and extended us invitations to the park to learn more about what they do, and how they do it.

We encourage anybody and everybody to get involved with a charity organization they feel passionate about. We here at Barenaked Ladies have made a decision based on what we feel. It's not about money, or petitions, or press... But it is about our fans. We listen to them, and they're important to us. Their sensibilities resonate with ours, and have for decades now. We've grown up together. Ultimately though, we made the decision that WE feel good about.

Thanks for all of your support. We'll see you all at a mutually agreeable concert venue in the near future!

Love
Barenaked Ladies"

Victory has been declared by fans who supported a petition asking Canadian band Barenaked Ladies to reconsider their scheduled show at Seaworld in February.

CNN initially reported the show had been pulled and it was both confirmed by Seaworld:

The Barenaked Ladies' show at SeaWorld has been taken off the theme park's concert schedule, a SeaWorld spokesman told CNN on Wednesday.
The decision to cancel the Canadian rock band's performance came two days after drummer Tyler Stewart posted a tweet saying the group is "looking at options" after viewing CNN's "Blackfish"documentary.
"Barenaked Ladies are not scheduled to perform at SeaWorld," SeaWorld spokesman Nick Gollattscheck said in an e-mail to CNN Wednesday. "They are not part of our concert line up."
The park's website does not list Barenaked Ladies on the schedule. February 15 and four other weekend dates just say "Coming Soon."

Over 10,000 people signed the petition on Change.org in just a matter of a few days and bombarded the band's social media sites encouraging them to cancel their show and not to be associated with captive marine mammal facilities like Seaworld and Marineland.

Anti captivity advocate Mike Garrett who initiated the petition was ecstatic about the news:

"Thank you to everyone who supported this petition and helped to share it around the world.  I'm very happy the show has been cancelled.  From the very beginning I truly believed BNL have a good social conscious and they would come to the right decision.  The barbaric industry of marine mammal captivity will soon be a relic of the past.  I would like to extend the invitation to the Barenaked Ladies to come to Niagara and play their show here in support of those who are fighting in defense of animals and it will be standing room only, guaranteed!"

  1. I hope they do come play in Niagara. That would be fantastic!
