In documents recently obtained by Marineland: In Depth from Ontario's Workplace Safety & Insurance Board, some brief but interesting details have emerged regarding accidents involving workers and animals at Marineland.
The documents which have also been uploaded to the Marineland Archive reveal between the years 1996 to 2012 there were a total of 91 accidents involving animals and workers that the WSIB thought were serious enough to allow claims made for lost time.
Of those incidents 3 involved actual attacks or assaults by animals, 4 were "animal related" injuries and 3 were insect stings/bites.
Interestingly the documents do not describe what the other 81 incidents were. Recently a trainer was injured during a show with a Beluga Whale.
These are also only reported incidents to the WSIB in which claims were approved. They do not include unreported incidents between animals and staff, denied claims or even incidents between animal and visitors.
