Marineland's Cetacean Inventory

Here is a look at the current cetacean inventory imprisoned at Marineland Canada as of Oct 1st 2013

KISKA ALONE AT MARINELAND photo by natalielucier

Orcas
Marineland has only one surviving orca remaining and that is Kiska.  She was captured off the coast of  Ingolfsh√∂fdi, Iceland at approximately 3 years of age and was transported to Marineland at the end of 1979.  She has spent most of her life swimming circles in Marineland tanks.  She had five calves at Marineland and none of them survived longer than 6 years.  Her five calves were Kanuck, Nova, Hudson, Athena and an unnamed male calf who died after only 62 days.  Kiska had a very close relationship with Nootka another female orca that resided a long time at Marineland before dying in 2008.  Kiska is one of only two orcas being kept completely alone in a tank in North America, the other being Lolita at the Miami Seaquarium.

Belugas
Marineland currently has 45 surviving Beluga whales.  Of those only 21 have been have been born at Marineland and the oldest of those born is 8 years. Marineland imports all their Belugas from Russia as they have been denied capture permits in the past to take Belugas from Canadian waters.  While Marineland's breeding program has had mixed results many Belugas have died there.

Dolphins
Marineland has been importing dolphins almost since the beginning.  Importing began in the late 60's from North American waters until the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act came into effect in 1972 denying Marineland the ability to steal dolphins within U.S. territory.  Marineland plundered Mexico's dolphins from the Gulf of Mexico for awhile until U.S. Customs seized and released an intercepted shipment and fined owner John Holer $10,000. Marineland eventually started importing dolphins from the Black Sea in Russia.  Marineland has a zero success rate with dolphin breeding as no calves born there survive so they are continually importing every few years.  Their current inventory consists of 5 bottlenose dolphins.
